A Fine Place To Start....

I created this blog because one of the MOST disappointing things I experienced as I was planning my wedding was the lack of photos I could find of Plus Size Brides.
I want to change that! Let’s make this a place where we can celebrate being a size 14, 16, 18, 20……24….you get the idea.

How do you figure out what is going to look good when the dresses you can try on are mostly size 10 and made for people that don’t have hips? What are some poses that I could have had my photographer take that would have been more flattering? How big does my bouquet need to be so it looks proportional? Yeah, I know…that last one was probably just me being weird.

You can participate by emailing 3 or 4 pictures (manageable sizes please!) that showcase your wedding to plussizebride@gmail.com . You MUST give credit to the photographer, even if it is Great Aunt Sue. Tell me a little something about yourself, your wedding, some of the ups and downs you experienced dress shopping. You can name names at the good shops but let’s not bash the less than gracious folks out there. I figure if there are enough places that we can share with everyone that has helpful staff the readers will get the hint and go there.

I would like to hear from all of you…the ones thinking about getting married sometime in the future, currently planning a wedding and the ones that have been married 20+ years.

Yahoo! Thank you for starting this. I'm a "curvy girl" too (16-18) and it was nearly impossible to find a dress. I was lucky enough to find a wonderful girl named Jen at David's Bridal (Easton) in Columbus, OH to help me. When I kept asking for the next size larger she didn't even wrinkle her nose.
When I have pics I'll send them.

Wow, this is great! I'm getting married in 5 weeks, and I've been constantly disappointed by the lack of plus sized brides out there.

It's been really disheartening to feel like you don't really belong (or in particularly bad moments like you're not a "real" bride) just because you can't try on a sample size.

I'll definitely send pictures in when I have them!

size 16-18 overhere.
i haven't even tried on a dress yet - I am dreading the experience.
I am curious about the size of the bouquet proportion thing too - you're not alone!!

I'm not sure I'm considered plus size, I bought my dress in a 12. BUT, I had a HORRIBLE time trying on dresses. Size 6 and 8 and 10s aren't even the same hem length (i was looking at knee length dresses). I can't believe the industry expects you to spend hundreds of dollars on a dress you've never even seen in your size. Blah. Good riddance to dress shopping! I found a perfect bridesmaid dress in green that suited me just fine!

Great work - too many sites that only ever show brides of a certain size. Good luck!

I love the concept of the plus size brides blog, but I'm uncomfortable with official comments reinforcing that it is a bad thing to be fat. If I'm here for inspiration and support, how am I supposed to feel when the first showcased post is gloating about no longer being plus-sized thanks to "hard work" (as if others haven't put hard work into taking care of their bodies without necessarily dropping below the arbitrary line between plus sizes and worthy-of-trying-on-clothes sizes?) with multiple explanation points. Her post would be fantastic and inspirational without that little dig. Her current size is irrelevant to supporting women who will be plus-sized on their wedding days. Could you perhaps make a policy of editing guest posts to remove body-shaming remarks from the brides we're supposed to look up to? I feel like I get quite enough reminders that I'm not straight-sized anymore from the rest of the world without adding your site to the list. :-/

I appologize if anyone was offended by me leaving her email complete. That was never the intention.
I edited it slighly and I hope that helps.

I am loving your site.
I thought I'd share this with you - just saw it mentioned on offbeatbride.com and thought you might want to feature some of the story:

Great story! I remember seeing her wedding posted a while back and it's really great to read more about her wedding.
